Let’s look back on the other Pinoy adaptations of our fave K-Dramas.

In October this year, it was announced that singer-host-actress Yassi Pressman will be starring alongside JC Santos (“100 Tula Para Kay Stella”) in the Filipino remake of the hit Korean movie, “More Than Blue,” and Pinoy fans are excited!

The OG 2009 film was a complete blockbuster after its release, grossing more than 4 million USD in South Korea and over 3 million USD in East Asia.
It centers on best friends and soulmates K and Cream, who are both orphans and have had their fair share of struggles. When K finds out that he has terminal cancer, he hides his illness from Cream knowing that it’s her biggest fear to be abandoned and left alone. It’s a heartbreaking story about two people who truly, deeply love each other.
We definitely can’t wait for Yassi and JC’s own take on K and Cream, as just by watching the teaser, we can already tell they have amazing chemistry. And if you’re as excited as we are, don’t worry, because “More Than Blue” will be streaming on November 19!
This isn’t the first time that a Pinoy adaptation took the Internet by storm, however. In fact, the 2020 South Korean television series “The World of the Married” will be having a Filipino remake next year!
The highly anticipated remake is yet another addition to BBC Studios’ “Doctor Foster” adaptations, which tells the story of a married couple whose family becomes afflicted due to an affair. It stars Jodi Sta. Maria, Sue Ramirez, Zanjoe Marudo, Jane Oineza, and many more!
The remake, entitled “The Broken Marriage Vow”, is set to release in January 2022.

As avid fans of the hallyu wave, we Filipinos not only watched Tagalog-dubbed Koreanovelas in the early 2010s, we took it up a notch and produced our own remakes, too!
Here are 5 Pinoy adaptations of hit Korean shows that we definitely loved:

The original TV series was released in 2004, starring the ultimate It Girl Song Hye Kyo and everyone’s first crush, Rain. It was reprised five years later when a Philippine remake, led by Heart Evangelista and Richard Gutierrez, was released in 2009.
It revolves around a free-spirited woman who agrees to marry a selfish actor so she can reacquire her childhood home. However, things get a little complicated when love blooms between the two.
The OG K-Drama was such a hit in South Korea that its last episode acquired a 42% rating, maintaining the first spot out of all the shows in the same timeslot, according to AGB Nielsen. The Pinoy adaptation, however, scored a 25% to 29% rating in Mega Manila!
My Girl
Let’s be real here, who hasn’t seen any #Kimerald show? The loveteam of Kim Chiu and Gerald Anderson took over our primetime shows in the late 2000s. In fact, they also starred alongside each other for the Pinoy remake of the 2005 K-Drama, “My Girl.”
The series is about a woman who has a bit of a talent in telling lies. She gets hired by a man who asks her to pretend to be his long lost cousin, just to fulfill his grandfather’s dying wish. But what happens when his grandfather makes a full recovery? Well, let’s just say that they found it really difficult to stay apart, especially since love is forbidden between the two.
While the show wasn’t a favorite in South Korean television, the Philippine version became a number one show on ABS-CBN and ranked fourth in AGB Nielsen Philippines Mega Manila.
My Lovely Sam-soon / My Name is Kim Sam-soon

If you’re wondering what Hyun Bin’s breakout role was before starring in “Crash Landing on You,” it’s in the 2005 drama “My Lovely Sam-soon.” It’s about a passionate baker named Kim Sam-soon (Kim Sun-a) who gets dumped by her cheating boyfriend and loses her job. One of the witnesses of this incident, however, was Hyun Jin-heon (Hyun Bin), the owner of a French restaurant who recognizes her talent and hires her as his new pastry chef.
The OG romantic comedy series was such a hit in South Korea, that 50.5% of Korean households tuned in to the finale. It was then adapted into a Pinoy drama in 2008, starring Regine Velasquez and Mark Anthony Fernandez. The Philippine version scored a 38.2% rating during the finale, too!
Descendants of the Sun

The 2016 drama “Descendants of the Sun” was widely embraced not only in South Korea, but in the Philippines as well. Because of its popularity, a Philippine remake starring Dingdong Dantes and Jennylyn Mercado was released in 2020, which you can now stream on Netflix.
The 65-episode series is about a soldier and captain of the special forces of the Philippine military, who meets a talented and passionate surgeon. The Pinoy version won “Most Popular Foreign Drama of the Year” in the 2020 Seoul International Drama Awards!
Encounter
Just this year, TV5 produced a Filipino remake of the K-Drama “Encounter,” which originally starred Song Hye Kyo and Park Bo Gum. She plays the role of a politician’s daughter, while he is an ordinary guy who seems to have given up on life. However, they find themselves attracted to each other despite their differences.
The OG drama had the third-highest premiere rating in the South Korean network! If you’re wondering what’s so good about this series, you can watch the PH remake on Vivamax!
