TRUE: Darryl Yap Booed At The 2022 Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival
Director Darryl Yap

Claim: Publiko posted on Facebook on Aug. 16 that controversial director Darryl Yap was booed when his name appeared in the credits of “Angkas,” a film he produced with several others.

Rating: True

Facts: The incident happened during the gala night of Angkas on Aug. 8 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines, contrary to what the news outfit Publiko posted that this occurred during the awards night.

Stage manager and artist John Mark Yap tweeted on Aug. 8 that he was at the CCP during the event and as the director thanked the film’s cast and crew, the audience clapped and cheered for everyone “but when the name of D/arryl Y/ap (one of the producers of the film) was mentioned, the entire theater went silent.”

But lawyer Dennis Gorecho, in a Facebook post on Aug. 18, said he was one of those who booed Yap.

Angkas is inspired by a documentary by Arbi Barbarona about a habal-habal driver from Compostela Valley who picks up dead bodies using his motorcycle, according to director Raineiro Yamson II. It was one of the films chosen for Cinemalaya this year.

Yap was among the executive producers of the film, which included Jonas Gaffud, Betsy Quisumbing, and Precy Ejercito.

Yap is the director of “Maid in Malacanang,” which critics said attempted to revise the history of the last moments of EDSA people power revolution in 1986.

Angkas failed to secure any awards from the independent film festival.

Yap said he indeed produced a Cinemalaya but could not publicly promote it because of Maid Malacañang.

He admitted that he was informed about the incident but brushed it off.

Sabi sa akin nung lumabas daw ang name ko nag-boo raw ang mga filmmakers na nasa bulwagan. Ano raw reaction koIto po: NOSI BALASI,” Yap said.

Why this matters:  Intervention was needed to help clear up the misconception that the film Yap produced had won any awards. The organic reaction of the crowd in Cinemalaya was a far cry from the propaganda that the viewers were impressed by Yap’s “prowess” as a filmmaker.
