Real estate tycoon Manuel Villar Jr. is the richest man in the Philippines with a net worth of $8.3 billion, according to a Forbes list, while Tesla’s Elon Musk is now the world’s wealthiest.

Villar topped the list of 20 richest people in the country, followed by ports tycoon Enrique Razon with a net worth of $6.7 billion and Henry Sy Jr. with a net worth of $2.8 billion.

Forbes reported on Tuesday, April 5, that war, pandemic and plunging stock markets have dented the fortunes of many of the world’s richest, but at least 1,000 billionaires still managed to grow their wealth over the past year.

The number of billionaires in the Forbes 2022 World’s Billionaires List dropped to 2,668 this year from a record 2,755 in 2021.

Musk, with a net worth of $219 billion, landed on top for the first time, dislodging Amazon founder Jeff Bezos from the spot he occupied for years, according to the annual list which saw 236 newcomers.

Collectively, the world’s billionaires have a combined net worth of $12.7 trillion, down from a record $13.1 trillion in 2021.

In all, 329 people dropped out of this year’s list, the most since the 2009 financial crisis, according to Forbes.

“The tumultuous stock market contributed to sharp declines in the fortunes of many of the world’s richest,” Kerry Dolan, Forbes assistant managing editor for wealth, said.

“Still, more than 1,000 billionaires got wealthier over the past year. The top 20 richest alone are worth a combined $2 trillion, up from $1.8 trillion in 2021,” she added.

According to the list, Bernard Arnault of LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton remains at No. 3, next to Musk and Bezos, followed by Bill Gates at No. 4. Rounding out the top five is Warren Buffett, who rejoins the group after falling to No. 6 last year.

In the Philippines, the Top 20 richest Filipinos are Villar, Razon, Sy, Andrew Tan ($2.8 billion), Hans Sy ($2.6 billion), Herbert Sy ($2.6 billion), Harley Sy ($2.4 billion), Teresita Sy-Coson ($2.4 billion), Elizabeth Sy ($2.1 billion), Ramon Ang ($2 billion), Lance Gokongwei ($1.6 billion), Tony Tan Caktiong ($1.3 billion), Betty Ang ($1.2 billion, Lucio Tan ($1.2 billion), Maria Grace Uy ($1.2 billion), Nari Genomal ($1 billion), Ramesh Genomal $1 billion), Sunder Gemonal ($1 billion), Roberto Ongpin ($1 billion) and Dennis Anthony Uy ($1 billion).

The Genomal family has been the sole licensee of Jockey in the Philippines for over 65 years.
