The Courage To Evolve: Lucien C. Dy Tioco On Leadership, Truth, And The Future Of Media
Recognized among Asia’s Most Inspiring Executives at the ACES Awards, the PhilSTAR Media Group EVP reflects on a career built on foresight, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to truth.

Leadership is often tested not when things go according to plan, but when the world demands a different one.
For Lucien C. Dy Tioco, executive vice president of PhilSTAR Media Group (PMG), navigating change has defined a career spanning nearly four decades in media.
He began at The Philippine STAR in 1987 as a branch coordinator in classified advertising, later moving into marketing research and advertising sales. Then he rose through the ranks to lead the organization's sales, marketing, and digital transformation initiatives.
His professional journey has earned him several distinctions, including the 2016 Agora Award for Outstanding Achievement in Marketing Communications; the CEO Excel Award for Communication Excellence from the International Association of Business Communicators; and the Outstanding Thomasian Alumni award from the University of Santo Tomas.
In 2023, he was named Digital Marketer of the Year by the Asian Marketing Federation for his work advancing the group's digital transformation and initiatives such as NakakaLocal.
His latest recognition as one of Asia’s Most Inspiring Executives at the 2026 ACES Awards adds another milestone to this journey, acknowledging a leadership approach that combines business strategy with innovation and social impact.
For Dy Tioco, the distinction carries a responsibility to continue moving the organization forward.
“Professionally, I think it emphasizes my role in the organization and what I could contribute and help steer the company to its relevance and longevity,” he says.

Foresight To Move Forward
Dy Tioco identifies foresight as one of his defining leadership strengths: recognizing emerging trends, understanding their implications, and preparing the organization for change.
This forward-looking mindset has helped PMG navigate technological disruption and explore new ways of reaching audiences. But anticipating change is only the beginning. Leaders must also have the courage to act.
Dy Tioco's guiding question is simple: Why not?
Even successful processes, he believes, deserve to be examined for opportunities to improve. Introducing new ideas can be challenging, particularly when established practices appear to work.
Nevertheless, Dy Tioco remains willing to explore possibilities, persisting with an idea until it is adopted or evidence shows it will not work.
This combination of vision, persistence, and pragmatism reflects an important dimension of leadership: sustaining success requires the willingness to evolve.
Progress Without Losing Purpose
For all the changes taking place within the media industry, Dy Tioco remains anchored in one principle.
“Our core DNA is really centered around the value of truth,” he says.
For him, truth is the defining identity of The Philippine STAR and the standard against which every new direction must be measured. Platforms may change and storytelling may evolve, but the responsibility to deliver credible journalism remains constant.
This commitment is particularly important as artificial intelligence reshapes content creation and information consumption.
Dy Tioco sees AI as a tool that should enhance human capabilities, improve efficiency, and help organizations serve audiences better. PMG is gradually integrating the technology into its operations, but he stresses that editorial accountability cannot be delegated to machines.
“We cannot depend on AI to take over our content,” he says, emphasizing the organization's responsibility to deliver accurate information and content that inspires positive values.
His position reflects a broader leadership principle: innovation must remain guided by responsibility. Technology should strengthen an organization's ability to fulfill its purpose, not compromise the values that make it worthy of public trust.
Value Beyond Media
Dy Tioco’s vision for PMG extends beyond traditional publishing. He sees opportunities to develop an integrated media ecosystem that creates meaningful value for audiences, business partners, and communities.
This philosophy finds expression in NakakaLocal, the group’s initiative supporting micro, small, and medium enterprises while celebrating Filipino culture.
Partly inspired by his experience as president of the Philippine Marketing Association during the pandemic, Dy Tioco recognized how media could help entrepreneurs navigate challenges and reach new opportunities.
Guided by the slogan “Love Local and Grow Global,” NakakaLocal promotes Filipino businesses while encouraging consumers to appreciate the culture, creativity and national pride behind local products.
The initiative illustrates his belief that organizations can use their influence to create meaningful impact beyond their immediate commercial objectives. For Dy Tioco, partnerships are most valuable when they advance shared goals and contribute to broader success.
Developing People, Sustaining Success
An organization's ability to transform ultimately depends on its people.
Dy Tioco draws inspiration from successful sports teams, particularly the role of coaching in developing individual potential while advancing collective goals. He cites the philosophy of "Double-Goal Coach," which emphasizes personal growth alongside organizational performance.
Understanding what motivates employees, he believes, enables leaders to align individual aspirations with organizational objectives.
Building a sustainable organization therefore requires more than successful strategies. It demands a culture that encourages collaboration, continuous learning and openness to new ideas.
Meaning Of Recognition
For Dy Tioco, professional recognition is meaningful, but personal fulfillment ultimately goes beyond awards and achievements.
Asked what he hopes to be remembered for, he considers whether he has made good use of the opportunities entrusted to him.
“It's not about the riches or the accolades, the achievements that I've accomplished," he reflects. "It's more about, at the end of the day, if I was able to serve well.”
This perspective gives deeper meaning to his ACES recognition: leadership is measured not only by the ability to move an organization forward, but also by the capacity to preserve its purpose, develop its people, and contribute to society.
As PMG continues to explore new technologies and platforms, Dy Tioco's challenge remains to anticipate what comes next without losing sight of what matters most.
The ACES distinction celebrates this commitment to progress. His enduring measure of success, however, is whether every transformation strengthens the organization's ability to serve its readers, partners, and the public.
For Dy Tioco, the future belongs to those willing to evolve — and wise enough to know what must never change.
