A super typhoon, with international name Champi, that is set to enter the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) by Tuesday morning, Oct. 20, has weakened.

In its 8 p.m. advisory on Sunday, Oct. 18, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) categorized Champi as a typhoon outside the Philippine area of responsibility.

As it enters PAR, it will be given the local name Rosal.

PAGASA said in its 4 a.m. advisory today, Oct. 19, Champi was located 1,720 kilometers east of Southern Luzon with maximum sustained winds of 175 km per hour and gustiness of up to 215 kph.

PAGASA weather specialist Grace Castañeda said on Sunday, the winds of Champi may be felt by Wednesday, Oct. 21.

It will bring rains as early as Tuesday in the southern parts of the Philippines and will intensify in the northern parts of the country by the rest of the week.

On the other hand, cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms will affect the Zamboanga Peninsula, Basilan, Tawi-Tawi and Palawan due to the intertropical convergence zone.

Quezon, the Bicol Region Quezon, Marinduque, Romblon, Oriental Mindoro, Metro Manila, the rest of Luzon, and the rest of Visayas will also have cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms, but due to the easterlies.

The rest of Mindanao will experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms due to ocalized thunderstorms, PAGASA said. – With Josiah Antonio
