The wearing of uniforms will not be required for the planned resumption of face-to-face classes during the opening of the new school year this August.

In a statement, Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte stressed on Monday, July 18, that even before the COVID-19 pandemic, the Department of Education (DepEd), through its Department Order No. 065, Series of 2010, had already relaxed the rules on the wearing of school uniforms in public schools to lessen the financial burden on students and their families.

“All the more that it will not be required this school year, given the increasing prices and economic losses due to the pandemic,” Duterte said.

Last week, Duterte declared that the department would push through with the opening of school year 2022-2023 on Aug. 22, saying the plan had been approved by President Marcos.

She said schools could implement a combination of face-to-face classes and distance learning from August to Oct. 31.

Full face-to-face classes of five days a week are set to begin on Nov. 2.
