Leptospirosis Cases Surge; NKTI Now Full
The Department of Health said it is implementing inter-hospital referral system to address the lack of beds at the National Kidney Transplant Institute.
Following heavy rains and massive flooding in Metro Manila, the National Kidney Transplant Institute (NKTI) has reached full capacity due to a surge in leptospirosis cases.
The Department of Health (DOH) advised the public on Monday, Aug. 24, to avoid seeking medical attention at the NKTI.
“If possible, don’t go to NKTI (for your health concerns). Those with symptoms of kidney disease can avail themselves of medical care in other DOH hospitals,” Health Secretary Edwin Mercado said.
Mercado said the DOH is implementing inter-hospital referral system to address the lack of beds at the NKTI.
Leptospirosis patients can be transferred to the Philippine General Hospital once they become stable, Mercado said.
The DOH said 3.1 million Doxycycline capsules have been distributed to health centers.
As of Aug. 22, the DOH had posted 4,285 leptospirosis cases, down from 6,839 cases logged during the same period last year.
In Manila, one person has died of leptospirosis, bringing the number of leptospirosis-related fatalities to 13 from Jan. 1 to Aug. 24.
