The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration advised the public to brace for more rains today, Aug. 18, due to southwest monsoon.

In its 4 a.m. advisory today, PAGASA said 100 to 200 millimeters of rain is expected in Benguet, La Union, Pangasinan, Zambales, Bataan, Cavite, Batangas and Occidental Mindoro; and 50 to 100 mm in Metro Manila, Ilocos Sur, Abra, Tarlac, Pampanga, Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, Laguna, Rizal, Oriental Mindoro and Antique.

On Wednesday, Aug. 19, 100 to 200 mm of rain may fall in Benguet, La Union, Pangasinan, Zambales, Bataan and Occidental Mindoro; and 50 to 100 mm in Ilocos Sur, Tarlac, Pampanga, Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, Metro Manila, Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, and Oriental Mindoro.

On Thursday, Aug. 20, 50 to 100 mm of rain may be dumped in Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union, Benguet, Pangasinan, Zambales, Bataan, Tarlac, Pampanga and Occidental Mindoro.

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) recorded 201.7 millimeters of rainfall in Metro Manila from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 17.

“From noon to 2 p.m., the rainfall volume reached 138 mm. As a result, water levels quickly rose, causing flooding along various roads in Metro Manila,” the MMDA said.

In 2009, Tropical Storm Ondoy dumped 455 mm of rainfall in 24 hours, causing unprecedented, widespread flooding.

The heavy monsoon rains flooded key streets and snarled traffic early Monday in Metro Manila and outlying provinces, forcing the government and private companies to suspend work. Classes at all levels were also canceled starting at noon. Schools were asked to shift to online learning.
