Transport groups are calling for a P10 minimum fare for public utility jeepneys to compensate for rising fuel prices.

Pasang Masda president Obet Martin said they want a provisional P1 fare increase while the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) hears its formal petition for a fare hike.

Transport groups have petitioned for a P15 minimum fare for jeepneys, with hearings to begin on March 8.

Martin said the P1 fare hike would help drivers in the meantime while their petition for the P15 minimum fare would go through the lengthy process with the Board.

He added that the increase would be a huge boost for drivers who are struggling to get back on their feet with the recent consecutive oil price hikes after a lengthy transport shutdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Martin thumbed down transport strike warnings by other groups, saying this would further burden commuters.

The Liga ng Transportasyon at Operators sa Pilipinas (LTOP) said it is planning to stage a transport holiday if the LTFRB fails to act on its call for a fare hike.

LTOP president Lando Marquez said calls for fuel subsidy and the fare hike have not been heeded by the LTFRB, which have been affecting its drivers and operators.

At least eight regions will take part in the transport strike next month if the issue has not been addressed, according to the group.
