Bodies come in different shapes and sizes; some are curvier, and others have narrow hips or broader shoulders. If you are thinking about getting into your best shape, knowing your own body type first will let you find the most effective workout and diet accordingly.

If you tend to gain weight on your mid-section with a little body fat stored in your lower body, then you must be apple-shaped or an endomorph. The kind of fats stored in your tummy aren’t those you can pinch or grab with your hands. Called visceral fats, these are found deep within your abdomen and surround vital organs like your liver and pancreas.

According to Harvard Health Publishing, “Visceral fat has been linked to metabolic disturbances and increased risk for cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. In women, it is also associated with breast cancer and the need for gallbladder surgery.”

Participating in aerobic exercises such as brisk walking, running, dancing, and cycling will not only help you burn excess body fats, but improve your cardiovascular health as well. However, you must consult first with your doctor to know which exercises are appropriate for you.

Harvard Health Publishing recommends “regular moderate-intensity physical activity at least 30 minutes per day (and perhaps up to 60 minutes per day) to control weight and lose belly fat. Strength training (exercising with weights) may also help fight abdominal fat.

“Diet is also important. Pay attention to portion size, and emphasize complex carbohydrates (fruits, vegetables, and whole grains) and lean protein over simple carbohydrates such as white bread, refined-grain pasta, and sugary drinks.”

Here are five exercises that you can start doing at home to strengthen your lower body and core while burning calories too.

1. Squats

Squats help in building overall muscle mass that results in improved performance and strength. Place your feet parallel to each other, at least shoulder-width apart. You can extend your arms to keep your balance, or just place them behind your head while bending your knees and hips. Squat down as low as you can and stick out your butt as if you are about to sit on a chair.

2. Lunges

Lunges are lower body exercises that help in defining the legs and the glutes while making your knees stronger and firmer. Doing lunges regularly also helps in improving your body coordination and balance. Step one foot forward, then drop your body straight down until your leg reaches a 90-degree angle. Return to your starting position, switch legs, then repeat.

3. T-Pushups

T-pushup is an upper body exercise that targets the chest, shoulders, and triceps. It also helps in strengthening your core, which is important for apple-shaped bodies who tend to carry more weight around the waistline. Start by doing a plank position, then bend your elbows so that your body is at least 2 inches from the ground. Push up, then lift one arm on the side as if you are trying to reach the ceiling while twisting your torso to the side. Hold this position for a second before rolling onto your other side to repeat.

4. Planks

Another excellent core-strengthening exercise is planking, and it requires your arms, legs and abdominal muscles to all work together. It is good for your spine and may help improve your posture. To achieve a classic plank, start with a pushup position then slowly bend your elbows to support your upper body and keep it steady. Keep your core tight, your back straight, and your arms and toes firm on the ground.

Planks are easy to modify, depending on your body needs and capacity. You can do a high plank or bend your knees for support if you are looking for an easier option, or you can do side planks for a more intense core exercise.

5.Burpees

Burpees offer a full body workout that let you burn more calories and body fats quickly. From a squat position, place your hand on the floor, feet out, then do a pushup motion. Jump towards the direction of your hands so that your hands and feet are near each other, then stand up, reach over your head, and hop into the air. Repeat. Do things slowly to avoid injuries. You can also remove the pushup or jumping part to modify it based on your preference.

Trimming down your midsection might be a long process before you see results but incorporating discipline, a balanced diet, and being consistent will definitely improve your odds of living a healthier life.
