Marcos, Trudeau Engage In ‘Sock Diplomacy’
The Canadian Prime Minister’s thing for novelty socks has made him an online sensation, with social media users noticing that his choice for foot covering tends to be dependent on the event he is attending.
BANGKOK – It was President Marcos’ turn to experience the “sock diplomacy” of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who is known for using his socks to make a statement.
Photos posted on Marcos’ social media pages showed the Philippine leader and Trudeau showing their socks to one another on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit here.
Trudeau was wearing light blue socks with black polka dot design while Marcos was sporting black socks with light green and purple shapes.
“Meanwhile, there seems to be a battle of the socks at the sidelines of the APEC Summit!” Marcos said in a tweet.
In a succeeding tweet, Marcos created a poll asking his followers who wore his socks better.
As of 6 p.m., more than 64 percent of those who answered the poll voted for Marcos.
Trudeau’s thing for novelty socks has made him an online sensation, with social media users noticing that his choice for foot covering tends to be dependent on the event he is attending.
He was seen wearing red socks with a white maple leaf during Canada Day and rainbow socks at a pride rally. But there were instances when Trudeau simply displayed his favorite characters such as when he sported a pair of Chewbacca socks during a business summit in New York in 2017.
Trudeau’s light moment with Marcos came days after he was confronted by Chinese President Xi Jinping for supposedly leaking details of a private meeting.
