Top 1: New Zealand weightlifter to become first transgender Olympian
New Zealand has selected Laurel Hubbard for the women’s weightlifting event in the Tokyo Olympics.
Hubbard will compete in the super heavyweight 87+ kilograms category.
Well, for starters, Laurel is a transgender. So, this means she is going to be the first transgender athlete to ever compete at the Olympics.
Eligibility is not a question because the International Olympic Committee has issued guidelines allowing transgenders to compete as women since 2015! That is, provided that their testosterone levels are below 10 nanomoles per liter for at least 12 months before their first competition.
This rule has sparked debate in the world of sports, particularly over inclusion and fairness, as it has also been an issue with straight women who had unusually high levels of testosterone in their bodies.
Testosterone is also available in supplements as they can strengthen muscle tone and bone mass, so it might be the reason why the committee decided to regulate it.
Reuters reported that New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern defended on the selection of Hubbard on Tuesday, June 22.
