According to Arguelles, Marcos’ speech highlighted easy political wins.

RCBC chief economist Mike Ricafort told “Political Beat” on One News that Marcos’ proposal to raise the income tax exemption threshold could provide meaningful relief to workers as rising prices continue to erode purchasing power.

Jean Encinas-Franco, a political science professor at the University of the Philippines, said zeroed in on gut issues.

She also said Marcos’ remarks were politically significant because they suggested he was willing to pursue accountability even if it affected members of his own family.

But she added that the administration would ultimately be judged on whether cases were actually filed and pursued.

“Rhetoric is fine, but actions are better,” Reuters quoted Franco as saying.
