MMFF 2025: Manila’s Finest Wins Gatpuno Award for Cultural Impact and Social Relevance
The film was recognized not only for its storytelling and cinematography, but also for its compelling portrayal of Filipino culture and patriotism.

Period crime thriller “Manila’s Finest” has earned the Gatpuno Antonio J. Villegas Cultural Award at the 51st Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF), a distinction reserved for films that go beyond entertainment to reflect Filipino identity, values, and social realities.
The film was recognized not only for its storytelling and cinematography, but also for its compelling portrayal of Filipino culture and patriotism. Directed by Cannes-winning filmmaker Raymond Red, “Manila’s Finest” is set in late-1960s Manila and follows a group of policemen navigating a city caught between criminal violence, political maneuvering, and an eroding public order.
The film, produced by MQuest Ventures, Cignal, and Spring Films, places crime and law enforcement against the backdrop of political unrest and civic instability, reflecting the tensions that would soon erupt into the First Quarter Storm.
What is the Gatpuno Award and why is it important?
Unlike technical awards or acting recognitions, the Gatpuno Antonio J. Villegas Cultural Award is a special recognition given by the MMFF. The Gatpuno Award serves as a marker of meaningful filmmaking, giving prestige to stories that deepen public understanding of society and history.
It is named after former Manila mayor Antonio J. Villegas, the “Father of Local Film Festivals,” who started the original Manila Film Festival in 1967. The film festival would later evolve into what is now called the MMFF.
The Gatpuno win for “Manila’s Finest” strengthens MQuest Ventures’ track record in producing culturally resonant cinema, marking its third consecutive year receiving the same award.
“We have only started producing films three years ago and from “GomBurZa,” to “The Kingdom,” to now “Manila's Finest,” we have the Filipino culture as part of our ethos,” said MediaQuest Ventures President and CEO Jane Basas in her acceptance speech for the award during the 2025 MMFF Gabi ng Parangal.
For Basas, the recognition affirms MediaQuest Ventures’ commitment to telling stories that matter. Manila’s Finest further reflects the direction MediaQuest Ventures is taking as a studio, “supporting films that are ambitious in craft, grounded in history, and able to engage audiences beyond the surface.”
One of MMFF’s most awarded titles
Beyond the Gatpuno win, Manila’s Finest has also emerged as one of the festival’s most awarded entries, earning seven more wins.
The film took home Third Best Picture, Best Cinematography (Raymond Red), Best Production Design (Digo Ricio and Big Bulb Productions), Best Musical Score (Emerzon Texon and Fred Sandoval), Best Sound Design (Roy Santos and Neil Diokno), Best Original Song for “Sandalan” (performed by Piolo Pascual, composed by Vehnee and Ladine Saturno), and Best Float.
