Maya Completes Recycled Plastic Card Shift, Unveils Bukad Special Edition

Maya has completed its transition to 100 percent recycled plastic for all newly produced wallet cards, ahead of its year-end target. The move makes more responsible materials the standard across its wallet card portfolio.  

The company began rolling out Maya wallet cards made from recycled polyvinyl chloride (rPVC) in June 2026. With the transition fully implemented, all newly produced Maya wallet cards – whether Mastercard or Visa – are now made from 100-percent recycled plastic while maintaining the security, durability and functionality customers expect.

Each card carries a “Made from 100% Recycled Plastic” mark on the back, making the change visible to customers.

Shailesh Baidwan, group president of Maya and co-founder of Maya Bank. “By completing our transition to recycled plastic for wallet cards, we are bringing that principle into products our customers use every day. It is a practical expression of how we want to build and grow Maya responsibly.” 

To mark the milestone, Maya is introducing the special-edition Maya Bukad Card, a nature-inspired Visa card created in collaboration with Filipino visual artist and illustrator Raxenne Maniquiz. 

A playful take on bukadkad, the Filipino word describing a flower in bloom, Bukad draws from the richness of Philippine nature. Maniquiz’s signature colorful illustrations fill the card with flowers, foliage, wildlife and small details that reveal themselves with every look. 

 The collaboration reflects Maya’s support for creative talent by bringing local visual storytelling into an everyday financial product. It also connects the card’s nature-inspired design with Maya’s broader commitment to environmental stewardship and responsible growth. 

“Bukad brings this transition to life through art and design,” Baidwan said. “Raxenne’s work connects the nature that inspired the design with the recycled material behind the card. It reflects how we can support local creative talent while making more thoughtful choices about the resources we use.”

The Maya Bukad Card is made from 100- percent recycled plastic and powered by Visa. It can be used for purchases and ATM withdrawals wherever Visa is accepted worldwide. 

For a limited time, Maniquiz’s illustrations will also appear on a Bukad scarf, extending the collaboration beyond the card. The scarf will be available exclusively at PURVEYR Fair on Sept. 12 to 13 at the World Trade Center Tent. Fairgoers who purchase the Maya 

Bukad Card for P350 can receive a Bukad scarf for free. 

The special-edition card will also be available through the Maya app beginning Sept. 9. Customers can order it by opening the Maya app and proceeding to the Cards tab. 

The wallet card transition forms part of Maya’s broader sustainability agenda, which covers financial inclusion, responsible innovation, customer trust, employee well-being and environmental stewardship. Since 2022, Maya has monitored and reduced its Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions as part of its sustainability commitments. 

The initiative also complements #MayaSWITCH, an employee-led program promoting energy conservation and reduced use of single-use plastics in the workplace. 

From its recycled material to its celebration of Philippine nature and creativity, the Maya Bukad Card brings Maya’s sustainability commitments into something customers can carry and use every day.
