Locally made footwear from Marikina were worn by the candidates of Miss Universe Philippines 2026, putting the country’s shoe capital back in the spotlight.

In its Facebook posts, the pageant organizer said the candidates wore shoes under the SAFATOS Marikina line in key segments of the competition.

Videos and photos released by the organizer showed candidates in swimwear wearing locally made designs, highlighting the craftsmanship of Marikina shoemakers.

Among those featured were the creations by Rowiliza Landicho of Roweliza, Vilma Fontilla of Jakob and Marlyn Magbag of Zachy Shoes.

The SAFATOS Marikina line is handcrafted using Philippine tropical fabrics and produced through a collaboration of the Philippine Footwear Federation Inc., Department of Science and Technology–Philippine Textile Research Institute and the Marikina City government.

Mayor Maan Teodoro said the recognition underscores the quality and creativity of the city’s shoemaking industry and strengthens its position as the country’s shoe capital.

“This recognition is a testament to the world-class craftsmanship of Marikina’s shoe industry. Through this, we are able to showcase the city’s creativity and quality through the footwear worn by the candidates,” Teodoro said.

Local officials said support programs, including trade fairs, incentives and assistance during the pandemic, helped sustain and expand the shoe industry.

Bea Millan-Windorski of La Union was crowned Miss Universe Philippines 2026 on Saturday, May 2. She bested 50 contestants in the country’s local franchise of Miss Universe, and succeeded Quezon Province’s Ahtisa Manalo, who finished third runner-up in the pageant’s global competition.
