DAVAO CITY – People in this city who participated in a rally marking the declaration of martial law on Sunday, Sept. 21, feasted on 100 roasted cows, a huge crocodile-shaped cake and a roasted or lechon crocodile in Rizal Park, now named San Pedro Square.

Vice President Sara Duterte said the management of the Davao Crocodile Park called her up and pledged one roasted crocodile for Sunday’s protest and prayer rally in the city.

Phillip Marco Dizon, proprietor of Davao Crocodile Park, confirmed they were sending one crocodile lechon as their contribution.

“But we cannot compete with the 100 lechon baka that was also intended for the rallyists. We can only give one crocodile lechon,” Dizon said.

The Vice President’s friend reportedly also donated a four-meter-long crocodile-shaped cake, which was also distributed to the people.

Duterte, who was in Tokyo, Japan on Sunday, said the protest is a way of the people to vent their anger against the massive corruption in government.

Feasting on lechon baka is a tradition observed during the city’s important events such as Araw ng Davao or Kadayawan festivities.

The lechon baka started arriving as early as 10 a.m. even if the rally was supposed to start at 3 p.m.

The 100 lechon baka were contributed by the different restaurants and similar establishments here in the city.

VP in Japan

Last Sept. 20, Vice President Duterte met with the Filipino community in Sumida City in Tokyo, which was organized by the Republic Defenders for Peace and Unity Japan and the Kingdom of Jesus Christ.

At the rally, the Vice President said she recently spoke to her father, former president Rodrigo Duterte, who is detained in the Netherlands.

The Vice President lamented the speed in which Marcos sent her father to the International Criminal Court, yet it has been slow in bringing Ako Bicol party-list Rep. Zaldy Co back to the country.

Co, who has been in the US since the start of the 20th Congress, has been ordered by Speaker Bojie Dy to come home or face disciplinary action.

“What happened to Co? He is in America, eating American burger. They managed to kidnap former president Duterte. Why can they not kidnap Zaldy Co and take him back to the Philippines?” the Vice President said. “Just cancel the travel authority.” – With Evelyn Macairan
