Beyond ‘Manila’s Finest’: MediaQuest Ventures’ Films That Put Filipino Stories in the Spotlight

After making waves at the 51st Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF), period crime thriller “Manila’s Finest” capped the year as one of the festival’s most awarded entries, taking home a total of eight wins including Third Best Picture.

The film, directed by Cannes-winning filmmaker Raymond Red, also earned the Gatpuno Antonio J. Villegas Cultural Award which is a special recognition for films that go beyond entertainment to reflect Filipino identity, values, and social realities.

But “Manila’s Finest” isn’t a one-off.

The film’s success reinforces MediaQuest Ventures’ commitment to historically grounded films that deliver both craft and deeper impact.

Here are the other standout titles MediaQuest Ventures has produced in recent years, from historical epics to genre-driven spectacles and inspiring music dramas:

GomBurZa: A historical epic that reignites Filipino consciousness

If “Manila’s Finest” held up a mirror to political unrest in the late 1960s, “GomBurZa” reached further back, revisiting a pivotal moment that shaped Filipino identity: the execution of three Filipino priests falsely accused of sedition and treason.

Directed by Pepe Diokno, “GomBurZa” tells the story of Mariano Gomes, José Burgos, and Jacinto Zamora, whose martyrdom in 1872 helped ignite nationalist consciousness and influenced generations of reformists, including José Rizal, who would later dedicate El Filibusterismo to them.

GomBurZa won seven awards in the 49th MMFF, including Second Best Picture honors, Best Director for Pepe Diokno and Best Actor for Cedrick Juan. Produced by MediaQuest Ventures and Jesuit Communications in cooperation with CMB Film Services, the historical film also stars Dante Rivero, Enchong Dee, Piolo Pascual, and Elijah Canlas.

The Kingdom: A bold “what if” fantasy rooted in politics, power, and inheritance

One of MediaQuest Ventures’ groundbreaking entries to date, “The Kingdom” is a high-stakes royal drama that imagines an alternate Philippines as the Kaharian ng Kalayaan, a sovereign kingdom untouched (but influenced) by colonizers and ruled by a divine monarchy.

The film centers on a succession dispute that triggers political fractures within a ruling family headed by Lakan Makisig (Vic Sotto), torn between three heirs: Magat Bagwis (Sid Lucero) known for his temper, Dayang Matimyas (Cristine Reyes) who is driven by forbidden love, and Dayang Lualhati (Sue Ramirez), the father’s favorite, whose kidnapping becomes the spark for conflict.

As the kingdom scrambles to reclaim Lualhati, the film evolves into a story about rule, rebellion, and reform, pushing beyond spectacle into themes that feel strikingly familiar in real-world politics.

Produced with APT Entertainment and MZet Television Productions, “The Kingdom” took home multiple awards in the MMFF 2024, including 2nd Best Picture, Best Visual Effects, Best Production Design, and Best Director for Michael B. Tuviera, and the Gatpuno Antonio J. Villegas Cultural Award.

The film also marks Vic Sotto's first serious role in a Metro Manila Film Festival entry. Piolo Pascual also co-stars in the film as the outcast farmer Sulayman "Sulo" Tagum.

Song of the Fireflies: A moving drama about the power of music, resilience, and hope

“Song of the Fireflies” is the kind of film that builds emotional momentum through dreams, community, and music. The film celebrates the inspiring story of the Loboc Children’s Choir, from the humble town of Bohol to the bright lights of Hollywood.

Set in the 1980s, it follows young students Jacqueline and Herbert and their gifted choir mates as they face grueling competitions on the way to the national stage in Manila. At its core, the film is about how ambition forms in small towns, and how children carry the hopes of families who dream beyond their circumstances.

“Song of the Fireflies” has earned international recognition, including Best Picture at the 2025 Manila International Film Festival in Los Angeles, Best Actress for lead star Morissette, Best Supporting Actress for Rachel Alejandro, Best Supporting Actor for Noel Comia, Jr., and Special Award for world premiere.

Directed by King Palisoc, the film also won the Platinum Remi Award at the 58th WorldFest-Houston International Film Festival which is a global recognition for excellence in theatrical filmmaking and musical storytelling.

With “Manila’s Finest” emerging as one of MMFF 2025’s most awarded entries, MediaQuest Ventures continues to build momentum as a studio backing films that celebrate Filipino stories, history, and identity. From historical epics and fantasy dramas to music-driven narratives, its recent slate reflects a commitment to stories that resonate with audiences while elevating Philippine cinema on both local and international stages.
