Strengthening Family Relationships At Home

Strengthening Family Relationships At Home The internet is here to bridge gaps and strengthen ties of families, especially during this difficult time.

If you're in quarantine with your family, look around. Is Dad on his mobile phone, staying updated on coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) news? How about Mom? Is she looking for new recipes to try? Have you checked up on your Ate and Kuya? Are they checking out the latest trends on Twitter and Facebook, too? For some reason, you're also probably on your phone, reading this article.

Now that everybody in the family is glued to their gadgets and has found something that tickles their interest online, you somehow feel as if there's an invisible wall between you and them. If you think about it, does it really have to be this way? Do you have to feel distant even if you're only rooms, seats, or merely inches apart?

As we're expected to spend more time at home, why don't you take this as an opportunity to discover new ways to strengthen your relationship with your loved ones? Why don't you start with common denominators: gadgets and the internet?

Check out ways to strengthen family bonds through the internet:

1. Go back in time or into the future

Since the world is at your fingertips, be smart and use it to your advantage. On Google, you may look up what gimmicks were in or music was considered ‘hot’ during the time of your mom and dad. Sit down and let your "research" spark a meaningful conversation.

If you're a parent, you may also check out activities or trends that capture your children's interest. You may even finally learn how to properly use millennial lingo such as "spill the tea," "meme," and "yas" so you won't feel lost in the middle of a chat.

2. Have an online game day

Thanks to smartphones, you don't need game consoles or game boards to have a fun game day. Just gather the family in the living room and pick out multiplayer games you can install via Apple App Store or Google Play.

You won't even notice that you're building a new family tradition and creating lasting memories together in the middle of a friendly duel.

3. Stay connected via messaging apps

Did you find a hilarious meme on your feed? Did Facebook's "On This Day" pop up and show you a throwback photo? Forward it to your family's group chat and spread the good vibes.

If you're quarantined on your own, harness the power of telecommunications applications to strengthen your relationship with your family. Even if you're far from your loved ones, you can always check up on them or share your stories via Viber, WhatsApp, Messenger, or Skype.

You may also personalize and make the conversation more interactive with fun features such as stickers, filters, emojis, or GIFs.

4. Try online challenges together

Online challenges may unleash the fun, goofy, and creative side of every family member. TikTok, Facebook and YouTube users have come up with challenges that families can try.

You may come up with humorous sibling tag questions to answer with your brother or sister. You may also encourage the whole family to join take on the "Who's most likely" challenge on TikTok.

5. Set up a movie night

Since cinemas are off-limits, why not have the movie night within the comforts of your living room? With apps like Netflix, you can freely jump to adventure and fantasy movies/TV shows when you're done with a family member's movie pick.

The internet isn't here to create boundaries. From the very beginning, it was meant to strengthen communication and bridge gaps. Now that the world is going through a very rough patch, let's use it to our advantage as we strengthen relationships by staying connected.
