SURPRISE! Bong Go Files COC For VP As Rody Announces Retirement
President Duterte raises the hand of Sen. Bong Go following the lawmaker’s filing of certificate of candidacy for vice president on Saturday, Oct. 2, 2021 at the Harbor Garden Tent of the Sofitel Philippine Plaza Manila in Pasay City.

In a surprise move, it was Sen. Bong Go who filed a certificate of candidacy for vice president and not President Duterte, who was the one nominated by the PDP-Laban faction headed by Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi as their candidate for the country’s second highest post.

Go was being pushed by Cusi’s faction to be the standard-bearer but he declined.

Go, who was accompanied by Duterte during the COC filing at the Harbor Garden Tent of the Sofitel Philippine Plaza Manila in Pasay City on Saturday, Oct. 2, said the President withdrew his acceptance of the PDP-Laban nomination for him to run for vice president.

“So I am here to take on the challenge as PDP-Laban’s vice presidential candidate,” Go said.

Duterte, for his part, announced his retirement from politics.

“I'd like to wish Senator Bong Go all the best and good luck in his quest for the vice presidency,” Duterte said in a statement after raising the hand of Go following his filing of COC.

“I'd like to address myself to the entire nation. The universal sentiment of the Filipino as reflected in the different surveys and in many forums and, well, talks and meetings to discuss what I should do in my life. The overwhelming sentiment of the Filipino is that I am not qualified and it would be a violation of the Constitution to circumvent the law, the spirit of the Constitution,” Duterte said.

“And so, in obedience to the will of the people, who after all placed me in the presidency many years ago, I now say, sa mga kababayan kosundin ko ang gusto niyo. And today, I announce my retirement from politics. Salamat po sa inyong lahat,” he added.

Meanwhile, presidential daughter Sara Duterte-Carpio filed her COC for a third and final consecutive term as mayor of Davao City.

Duterte-Carpio, who is leading in various surveys, said she won’t run for president since her father already announced that he would seek the vice presidency, and only one of them would have to gun for a national position.

Whether the President’s retirement from politics will affect her earlier decision remains to be seen.

Go did not say who his running mate would be though Duterte-Carpio earlier said her father asked her to take the senator as her vice president should she decide to run for president.

He vowed to be a working vice president and spare tire should he win.

Go, who served as Duterte’s special assistant before he became senator, said he decided to run for vice president in the coming election to continue the programs and real changes that the President started, particularly on the war on drugs, corruption and crimes.

“First of all, our campaign against illegal drugs, corruption, and crime must be relentless. It is up to the people to judge whether their children are safer now and there is no fear because of criminals and addicts,” Go noted.

He said the President’s initiative should not be wasted so they would work harder to protect the lives and future of Filipino children over the next six years.

Go also vowed to address poverty and hunger in the country and ensure proper health services for the people similar to the assistance from the Malasakit Centers.

He said he would pursue Build, Build, Build projects to carry out a more convenient and comfortable life for all.

Here’s the speech of Go after he filed his COC for vice president:

Good afternoon!

Given that President Rodrigo Duterte decided to withdraw his acceptance of nomination, I am here to take on the challenge as PDP-Laban’s vice presidential candidate.

I intend to pursue and expand these efforts further towards overcoming this pandemic by achieving economic recovery, providing job opportunities, and addressing hunger and poverty.

I will continue to serve especially those who need government attention the most – ‘yung mga mahihirap po. I am determined to fulfill my role as a bridge for the poor, the needy, the hopeless and the helpless – connecting them to their government so that their voices are heard and their concerns are addressed during these trying times.

I don’t want to be remembered as just another senator or vice president. I want to be remembered as a Public Servant na nalalapitan ng sinumang ordinaryong mamamayan at buong pusong nagsisilbi para sa ikabubuti ng ating bansa.
