Simultaneous flag-raising and wreath-laying rites are scheduled at different historical sites today as the country marks its 124th Independence Day, the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) said.

President Duterte will lead the Independence Day rites at Rizal Park in Manila at 9 a.m., but the program will not be open to the public as a “countermeasure to curb the spread of the virus,” the NHCP said Saturday, June 11.

This will be Duterte’s last Independence Day celebration as Chief Executive as he is set to step down from office on June 30.

Similar ceremonies are taking place simultaneously at the Museo ni Emilio Aguinaldo in Kawit, Cavite; Pinaglabanan Shrine in San Juan City; Barasoain Church Historical Landmark in Malolos City, Bulacan; Bonifacio National Monument in Caloocan City; Museo ng Kasaysayang Panlipunan ng Pilipinas in Angeles City, Pampanga; Mausoleo de los Veteranos de la Revo-luccion at the Manila North Cemetery; Plaza Independencia in Cebu City and the Rizal Park in Davao City, among other various historical sites.

At the Laging Handa public briefing Saturday, June 11, Francis Kristoffer Pasion, NHCP senior researcher, said a socio-civic parade, cultural shows and a job fair would be held in Kawit, Cavite, where Emilio Aguinaldo, the country’s first president, declared independence on June 12, 1898.

The NHCP will also hold an Independence Day concert and a grand display of fireworks at Rizal Park to cap off the celebration.

Pasion said one of the ways to celebrate Independence Day is by being a good Filipino.

“We must be aware of our duties and responsibilities as a citizen. Let us follow the rules of our society,” he said in Filipino.
