A majority of Filipinos want Vice President Sara Duterte to testify in the impeachment trial against her, according to a new survey conducted by Pulse Asia.
The survey, conducted from Sept. 17 to 24 among 2,400 respondents, found that 51 percent wanted Duterte to testify before the Senate impeachment court, while 34 percent opposed the idea. The remaining 15 percent were undecided.
It also discovered that only 41 percent of respondents had sufficient or a great deal of knowledge about the impeachment case, while nearly six in 10, or 59 percent, said they had little or no knowledge of it.
Despite this, 55 percent said they were interested in the trial, while 20 percent expressed disinterest. The remaining 25 percent were undecided.
Respondents were divided on the allegations of unexplained wealth against Duterte, with 29 percent believing the allegations were true and 30 percent saying they were untrue.
The largest proportion of respondents, or 39 percent, said they could not determine whether the allegations were true. Another three percent said they lacked sufficient knowledge to give an opinion.
Compared with a similar survey conducted in July, the latest results showed a decline in the proportion of respondents who believed the allegations were untrue, from 38 percent to 30 percent.
Meanwhile, the proportion of those who could not say whether the allegations were true increased by seven percentage points, from 32 percent to 39 percent. Those who believed the allegations were true edged up from 27 percent to 29 percent.
