The COVID-19 pandemic as well as financial difficulties are causing more than half of Filipino workers to suffer from various mental health issues, according to a study conducted by MindNation, a mental health and well-being company.

About 53 percent of employees “are feeling a degree of mental health challenge” during the pandemic, according to the study.

“The Filipino workforce is feeling stressed, worried and anxious,” MindNation said in its report.

Results of the study bared that 61 percent of the respondents claimed that they are stressed, 53 percent are worried or anxious, 34 percent depressed and 32 percent feeling empty.

“What is furthermore alarming is that there is an average of eight percent among the employee population in every company who are suicidal and are thinking of self-harm,” it said.

A high 80 percent of the respondents attributed COVID-19 fears as the reason behind the mental health issues while 47 percent cited financial pressures.

Forty-four of the employee respondents cited personal matters as well as worker performance pressure.

About 25 percent reported difficulty in handling both family and work.

“With the boundaries between personal life and work blurred with people working from home, employees are working more than they did pre-pandemic when they were on-site with colleagues,” the report said.

Employees manifested a lack of focus and concentration, having less pleasure in doing things normally enjoyed, lower than usual self-confidence, sleeping problems, and feeling down and sad, the study revealed.

It also indicated that as workers suffer from mental health issues, there is a rise in absenteeism, productivity loss and employee resignation.

MindNation said the data were collated through online surveys conducted between September 2020 and April 2021 among 6,000 employees.

The study covered workers in the sectors of business process outsourcing, information technology, education and logistics, among others.

More than half or 57 percent of the respondents are females, 40 percent are males while lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender comprised three percent.

Most or 48 percent of the respondents belong to the 26-to-35 age group, followed by 35-to-55-year-olds.

To address the need for accessible mental health care, MindNation recently launched the MindNation app.

MindNation chief impact officer Kana Takahashi said the app is a one-stop shop for holistic well-being needs.

“With the app, you can now take care of your well-being every day, any day,” Takahashi said in a statement.

He added that the app gives the public access to 24/7 teletherapy services, including a Daily Mood Tracker.

It is also equipped with the WellBeing Quiz©, which can be taken regularly to track emotions and understand one’s state of well-being. Results come with recommended ways to attain better states of well-being.
