Songs about love turning into smash hits are par for the course in the world of pop music. Clinton Kane is treading the same path with his latest single “I Guess I’m In Love” that is now trending everywhere on social media.

But success in music charts do not often translate into personal relationships. According to the 22-year-old singer-songwriter, his girlfriend – to whom he wrote the song for – broke up with him a day after he released the pop ballad hit.

“I have been in four relationships altogether. I was younger back then. I felt like it was puppy love and some kind of attraction. But I know for a fact that this time, since I met her, I could say that I was truly in love,” Kane told OneNews.PH in a recent virtual interview.

Kane, who was born to a Filipino father and Norwegian mother, said he always turned to music to help him process all the emotions he was feeling, be they negative or positive. He wrote “I Guess I’m In Love” to celebrate his deep affection for his now ex-girlfriend.

“I was in a relationship back in December. I was in love with this girl and everything. It’s quite amazing [and] so weird [at the same time],” Kane said of his nine-month romance with the woman who broke his heart, but left him with a work of art.

The young singer is now moving on from that experience. He accepted the breakup and chose to focus his mind and energy on making music instead. Trauma, after all, eventually played to his advantage when it comes to singing and writing songs.

Kane had a rough childhood because he and his family did not stay in one place. He was born in Perth, Australia and grew up there, but his parents frequently moved the family around, living in the United Kingdom and Brunei Darussalam as well.

“My childhood and growing up (were) so complicated – with the moving around – and, you know, my mom and dad and my family are not around so much. It induced a lot of trauma from the past,” he said. His parents separated by the time he turned 14, according to a report.

“I have been through heartbreaks in different areas of my life: family, friends, romantic relationships – a lot of trauma in my heart. That (inspiration for songs) is where it all comes from,” Kane added. He is currently based in Los Angeles, California pursuing a music career.

Climbing the charts

Kane started listening to songs at a very young age. His early influences were Christian music because his mother was a pastor. He began writing songs only in 2018 but immediately found success and signed on to a major music label, Columbia Records, in 2019.

“I just loved it (music). I don’t need to be pushed. I don’t need to be motivated. I want to do this for the rest of my life until I die because I genuinely love it with every fiber in my being,” Kane said.

Detailing the winding journey and range of feelings that come with finally finding true love, Kane’s “I Guess I’m In Love” is proving to be huge hit in the Philippines. It has so far amassed over 52 million streams on Spotify Philippines since its release last Aug. 20, 2021.

Its official music video on YouTube has also been viewed at least 4.4 million times. Likewise, the pop ballad track is currently a mainstay on various local music charts, ranking within the top 20 of Manila-based mainstream radio stations.

On TikTok, the song has been covered by many Filipino artists, including SB19’s Pablo, whose stellar rendition garnered close to 200,000 views in less than an hour. It continues to be used as a background song for many fan-made videos uploaded on the platform.

Overseas, it also debuted at the US Billboard Hot 100 at No. 90. It keeps climbing several official music charts all around the world, including Australia (ARIA, No. 27), Canada (Canadian Hot 100, No. 50), UK (UK Singles Chart, No. 23), New Zealand (RMNZ, No. 27), and more.

Given a chance, Kane said he wants to collaborate with pop-rock band The 1975 and British singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran. He is going to release a full studio album before the year ends following the success of “I Guess I’m In Love.”

“I don’t want to go too far away from who I am, so I would keep that part of myself, and I always will. But I definitely would like to experience a different sound because I always wanted to be better than the last time I did,” Kane said.

Embracing his heritage

Kane traces his Filipino roots from Bohol, where his father came from. He said he has already  been to the Philippines several times. He went island hopping with his family back in the day, visiting places like Boracay in Aklan, Palawan, and his father’s hometown.

“I didn’t get to meet my Filipino relatives ‘cause I didn’t really meet that side of my dad’s family. But I definitely love the Philippines. I love the food, the people, I love everything about the Philippines,” he told The Philippine STAR.

Aside from the tourist destinations, Kane loved creating memories with the locals and spoke highly of the Filipino cuisine and culture. He said his favorite dish is pork and beef sinigang, but the Filipino street food also holds a special place in his heart.

“Filipino food is the best in the game, best food in the entire world, especially the street food. It’s actually amazing… I also miss the quality of the people. Filipinos are the best people in the world,” the Fil-Norwegian singer said.

“The love and the care (of Filipinos) are incomparable unlike anywhere else. I miss the culture. It was so great,” he added. Kane said he is looking forward to being back in the country anytime soon and hopes to stay a bit longer to explore more of its beauty.

Clinton Kane’s “I Guess I’m In Love” is out now on all digital music platforms worldwide via Columbia Records and Sony Music.
